This week, we ran a chart showing HP's crashing stock price since Mark Hurd was forced out of the company. After we published the chart, a friend emailed to say, "Hurd destroyed the company. Gutted R&D, which was the cardinal sin. It was always an engineer's company. He financialized it. And in so doing, set in motion the wheels of doom."
From 2010, here's a look at how R&D as a percentage of revenue fell under Hurd's watch..

Managed Print Services Now Form 50% of Xerox’s Revenues
Despite the telecom vertical witnessing a slowdown, Xerox still receives maximum revenues from this vertical. Rajat Jain, the first Indian to be appointed MD of Xerox in India, talks about succeeding in the quality-conscious and lucrative Indian market.
Xerox recently underwent a business transformation. What was it about?
From a pure products company, we recently ventured into the managed services space, which today accounts for 50% of our revenues. We saw a gap where customers were increasingly demanding a product plus service, with customisation for their individual needs. The benefit of this model is that a company does not need to invest in multiple expensive machines, and rather can just outsource the same, paying only for the service instead. This also means moving from an investment-heavy capex model to a cost-efficient opex model. In India, we are helping customers such as Vodafone, Cisco, Standard Charted Bank and Alstom to save on their costs, improve their print infrastructure and boost efficiencies through our ‘managed print services’...Read More

University Of Virginia Tech Gets A 3D Printer Vending Machine
Futurists often depict a world where anything and everything can be immediately obtained from easy to use machines. It’s as simple as a machine beaming in particles and rearranging them into a physical object that one can interact with. It may not be the same thing, but Virginia Tech has a new machine that’s awfully close. It’s called the Dream Vendor and it’s a vending machine of sorts that houses four MakerBot Thing-O-Matic 3D printers. HP's Collapse: A Case of Sex, Lies, Hatred and Stupidity
Saying that beleaguered tech giant Hewlett-Packard has “some challenges and shortfalls” that it needs to correct would be an understatement. On the heels of reporting on another quarter where results impressed no one, HP dropped a bombshell on the market by recording a writedown estimated at $8.8 billion in its acquisition last year for Autonomy.
While current HP management cries accounting fraud, former HP execs involved in deal as well as Mike Lynch, Autonomy’s former CEO assert that proper due diligence was done and its disclosures were highly transparent. Investors want to know what this really means for HP. The answer is simple – nothing.
In other words, what do we know now about HP that has altered our expectations in any meaningful way? Did this news suddenly hurt its market lead? Or did it worsen its chances of beating Apple, Google and now Research in Motion in the age of new tech? Not really...Read More

Should Hp's Ceo Meg Whitman Be Fired ?
HP's CEO says the big write-down the company took on its $10 billion Autonomy acquisition was the fault of prior management. But investors are chafing at the company's weakening performance and lousy stock price.A question that may get larger after Hewlett-Packard (HPQ -1.79%) wrote off $8.8 billion of its 2011 acquisition of British software company Autonomy is this: Should Hewlett-Packard start looking for a new chief executive?
The idea may sound loopy. Meg Whitman, the current CEO, has only been in the job for 14 months. But in her tenure, the stock price has fallen some 48% overall. It's worse for the year, down 53% and down about 60% since peaking at about $30 on Feb. 16. Moreover, half the traders in an online poll want Whitman gone and maybe the board of directors, too.
The stock closed Wednesday at $11.94, up 23 cents. So far this week, the stock is down 7.1%..Read more

Flint Group Announces Price Increases For All Printing Inks In Europe, Middle East and Africa
Flint Group Announces Price Increases For All Printing Inks in Europe, Middle East and Africa
In 2012, the global raw material markets have continued to be highly volatile. Despite the rather flat economic outlook, there are still many challenges for the supply chain. Demand from the emerging markets is rising while supplier production capacities shrink, putting pressure on the entire printing ink sector.
Wolfgang Blumschein, Vice President Sales, Print Media Europe adds “The situation is further aggravated by the weak Euro, as most world market base materials are traded in USD or USD-related currencies, like the Chinese Yuen. This will inflate the raw material prices even further for the foreseeable future” He continues, “In addition to these pressures on the raw material markets, significant cost increases in transport, packaging and energy have also had an impact on our industry and are expected to rise further in 2013.”...More

InkInkInk.co.uk Announces Quarterly Gains: Credits Enhanced Profitability to Utilizing VMware Zimbra Active Sync Services from MrMail.com / Innovative Communication Service Assists SMEs to Streamline Sales Process and Increase Cost Effectiveness of Service Delivery for Online and In-Store OperationsJust like many small and medium sized enterprise ventures in the UK, InkInkInk.co.ukrelies heavily on email and mobile phone services to keep in touch with their ink and toner sales representatives while they are in the field providing customer support or generating new sales leads. While the necessity of timely communication is an understood reality, the logistics of ensuring that every member of their team is kept abreast of developments throughout the organisation was a serious challenge; one that costing the company hundreds of dollars each quarter. Calculating the amount of time spent in the process of manually distributing information to every team member of our online and in-store operations served as the call to action. “We realized that the method of communication we were using was weakening our competitive edge on both fronts, stated Anthony David, the Proprietor of InkInkInk. “As a result our costs per sale in terms of time, energy and resources had risen sharply. We knew we had to find a comprehensive solution and MrMail.com clearly understood our business objectives. The recommendation of the Active Sync service was exactly what we needed. The system has performed extremely well, resulting in a marked reduction in expenses.”..More
China: Apple iPad Shipments Jump After Trademark Settlement
Apple's iPad shipments for China nearly doubled in the third quarter, after Apple settled in July a lengthy dispute over the iPad trademark name that once threatened to ban the device from store shelves in the country.
Shipments of the tablet in the third quarter reached 2.07 million units, up from 1.15 million in the previous quarter, according to Dickie Chang, an analyst with research firm IDC. He attributed the shipment growth to Apple finally gaining ownership of the iPad trademark in China, which cleared the way for sales of the new product.
Apple's third generation iPad went on sale in China on July 20, four months after it was made available in the U.S. The launch was delayed as Apple got embroiled in a legal battle with Chinese firm Proview, which had registered for the "IPAD" trademark in China years before...More

How Xerox Is Bringing Banking To Rural India
In rural parts of developing nations, banking is still a paper-based process. And if there’s one thing Xerox is good at, it’s managing a paper-based process.Kovendhan Ponnavaikko is a research scientist at Xerox. Ponnavaikko, teaming with a group of ethnographers also working with Xerox, has been working to solve a problem: how to bring banking to rural Indians. When you think Xerox, you probably think photocopying. But the company is making a case to banks throughout the world that their technology is exactly what is needed for low-cost banking options in the developing world.
With the help of people like Ponnavaikko, Xerox is developing multifunction devices that not only scan the forms needed to open bank accounts, but also allow users to interact with the resulting content. By stripping down banking technology to its essentials, Xerox hopes to create kiosks that eliminate the need for fully staffed bank branches. One major Indian bank is already on board with a pilot study.

HP Alleges Fraud In Autonomy Deal; Shares At 10-Year Low
Hewlett-Packard this morning asserted that there were substantial instances of financial fraud in connection with its acquisition of the software company Autonomy in 2011 for $11.1 billion.
The company also reported October quarter profits slightly ahead of Street estimates, but cautioned that January quarter profits will be below consensus estimates.
Specifically, HP today disclosed $8.8 billion in non-cash charges “linked to serious accounting improprieties, disclosure failures and outright misrepresentations at Autonomy … that occurred prior to HP’s acquisition of Autonomy and the associated impact of those improprieties, failures and misrepresentations on the expected future financial performance of the Autonomy business over the long-term.” In effect, the company is writing down close to 90% of the value of the transaction....More

Xerox & U.S. Customs Trying to Intercept Solid-Ink Shipments From S.Korea
Xerox has enlisted help from U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents to intercept shipments of solid ink sticks that infringe on Xerox patents.
Xerox has enlisted help from U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents to intercept shipments of solid ink sticks that infringe on Xerox patents. Distributed by Hana Corp. of South Korea, the ink sticks, used for printing, in lieu of fluid ink or toner powder, violate the International Trade Commission exclusion order (337TA, 549E), banning their importation. By law, agents can seize shipments as they cross the U.S. border.
“Products that infringe on patents literally steal jobs and taxes from the United States and rob revenue from manufacturing companies,” said Allen Westerfield, president of the Imaging Supplies Coalition. “Our research shows these bogus products can cause performance problems and even pose health and safety issues to the consumer.” The Imaging Supplies Coalition is a non-profit trade association of original equipment manufacturers, including Xerox, that have joined together to protect their customers by combating illegal activities in the imaging supplies industry...More

Oh Oh, Lexmark's Wants To Monitor your Printed Data
Lexmark's new program monitors printed data
Lexington-based Lexmark International on Thursday will unveil a new product that seeks to bolster security at companies by tracking how often and by whom certain documents are printed.
Called the Lexmark Secure Content Monitor, the software program stores an image of pages that are printed, scanned, copied or faxed on network-connected printers. The images are then run through an optical character-recognition program that takes the words off the page, so to speak. The words can then be compared automatically to a list of keywords that companies can set up to determine whether the documents contain sensitive information. If they do, an alert can be issued via email to notify someone of the printing.

Did Apple License Patents it Said it Wouldn’t?
Samsung tells judge: We need to see Apple-HTC settlementDid Apple license patents it said it wouldn’t?
Apple settled its patent disputes with HTC last Saturday, and lawyers from Samsung were paying attention. Papers filed in federal court Friday show that by Monday afternoon, Samsung was asking to get a look at that license agreement.
It isn't exactly clear what patents are covered in the agreement, but at least two of the patents Apple was using against HTC were also being used against Samsung. If Apple licensed those patents, that wouldn't be in accordance with how a key Apple witness described the company's patent policies. At trial, Apple IP chief Boris Teksler said the company tended to not license its most "unique user patents" at all, especially to competitors, as Reuters noted today.....More

U.S.Veterans Dept Signs $36 Million HP-Microsoft Cloud Deal
Department of Veterans Affairs will move 600,000 users to Microsoft's cloud email and collaboration services in one of the biggest cloud computing deals to date.
In what could be one of the biggest cloud computing contracts to date by number of users, the Department of Veterans Affairs will move 600,000 users to Microsoft cloud email and collaboration services.
The five-year, $36 million contract will first see 15,000 VA employees move to Microsoft's government community cloud collaboration offering, Office 365 for Government, with the rest of the agency's 600,000 users to follow over the remainder of the contract period. The agency will use Office 365 for email, calendaring, instant messaging, web and video conferences, Office collaboration tools and SharePoi
Instead of working directly with Microsoft, VA has signed on with HP Enterprise Services, which will act as the systems integrator and provide disaster recovery services. However, VA has a long history as a big Microsoft shop. In July, for example, the agency signed a five-year enterprise agreement giving the agency access to a broad array of Microsoft products and services..MoreCounterfeit Toner & Ink Products Seized in Malaysia

Organisations are constantly looking for ways to cut costs. When it comes to IT, the means by which they go about this are numerous, from outsourcing development or support, to consolidating servers and reviewing licensing. However, there are other areas that deserve attention in the battle to make savings: specifically those areas where lines of responsibility are uncertain.
One such area is printing and copying. Rarely seen as a priority by IT, printing is nevertheless viewed as mission-critical by 63 per cent of respondents to a recent Computing readership survey - think of the mayhem that typically ensues when a key office printer fails and you’ll quickly understand why. Xerox Slashing 2500 Jobs Worldwide, Writes-Off $100 Million
As she and other company executives announced third-quarter financial results, they also looked ahead to the fourth quarter and said they would spend $100 million on "restructuring" — usually corporate-speak for layoffs.
On Tuesday, Xerox provided some details of that restructuring: By the end of the year, 2,500 current employees will be former employees.
The layoffs amount to less than 2% of Xerox's worldwide workforce of 146,000 people. Those losing their jobs will be "mainly in the services side of the business," said Karen Arena, a spokeswoman at corporate headquarters in Norwalk, Conn...MoreNinestar Appeals $11.1 million Ink Cartridge Import Fine To Supreme Court
