Canon to Target Chinese Market Amidst Lingering Anti-Japanese Sentiment

Over the last couple of months, a political skirmish between Japan and China over the ownership of a set of islands has caused anti-Japanese protests all across China, affecting many of the Japanese manufacturing facilities. Some companies — most notably Panasonic and Canon — were forced to shut down operations and evacuate their premises as a result of the violent protests. Things got so bad that Chinese photographers had to camouflage their Japanese-brand cameras with red tape and Chinese flags.
Despite the political atmosphere in the world’s most populous nation, Canon has China squarely in its sights as it plans its next moves for international expansion....Read More

Despite The HP Disaster, Meg Whitman Is Not An Awful CEO

    By Nicholas Carlson
Despite HP being a huge mess right now, and her losing campaign for California governor, Meg Whitman is not as ineffective of an executive as you might think.
So argues Marc Bodnik, Silicon Valley startup investor and COO at Quora.
Bodnik says that actually, Whitman is a "very strong leader," and "among the most successful" CEOs in Silicon Valley.
Here is his full-throated defense, which we've republished with permission:
Meg Whitman: What's so great about Meg Whitman?....More

Deutsche Bank Downgrades Lexmark International (LXK) to Sell

The firm comments, "LXK shares have rallied ~35% since the end of August when it announced it would exit the Inkjet business and we believe near-term cost savings associated with this restructuring are now fully baked. In the meantime, we believe LXK’s medium-term growth prospects are damaged as its installed base and associated supplies revenue will decline for the foreseeable future, scale benefits dissipate and competitive forces increase. We cut our est's and rating to 'Sell' and view LXK at ~7x FY12 EPS as overvalued."....Read More

Inside The World's Biggest Consumer 3D Printing Factory (Great Video)

    Andy Greenberg, Forbes Staff.
If Santa replaced his elves with refrigerator-sized machines that digitally assemble toys out of nylon dust and lasers, his workshop might look something like this.
In October, 3D-printing startup Shapeways opened its New York production facility in Long Island City, Queens, the biggest consumer-focused 3D printing factory in the world. When I visited the site last week–at the height of its holiday frenzy–the startup had already installed nine industrial-sized 3D printers turning digital blueprints into solid physical objects at its fastest rate ever: In 2012 it printed more than a million items, well over its total for all prior years combined since the company launched in 2008. And by the holiday season of 2013 it hopes to have more than 50 printers filling its 25,000 feet of floor space....Read More

I’m betting that 2013 is going to be the year of the cloud. That’s going to be disruptive to many players in the IT business; the trend will cause some tech giants to stumble and fall. It also will trigger unheard of valuations for tiny companies that so far you’ve never heard of before. And not least, the cloud also will play a role in reviving the world economy.
All of which leads to my list of 10 predictions for the technology business for 2013, in no particular order:
One big company will disappear. No, I’m not talking about Hewlett-Packard(You can see that prediction below.)....Read More
