Following The Hp Autonomy Accounting Fiasco, is Xerox The Next Big Write-Off Disaster?

NORWALK -- During the technology-stock bubble of the 1990s, it would have been a compliment to say a company had the potential to become the next Hewlett-Packard Co. That same line would have a very different meaning now.
Today, if someone called a company the next Hewlett- Packard, this would probably mean it is a prime candidate to book huge losses because of disastrous acquisitions. What might such a company look like? Consider Xerox Corp.
At the start of 2007, Xerox had a stock-market value of $16 billion. Since then, the Norwalk-based printer and copier pioneer has paid about $9.1 billion to acquire 41 other companies. It has destroyed more value than it created. At $6.79 a share, Xerox's market value is $8.6 billion -- equivalent to 71 percent of its common shareholder equity, or book value....More

How Patent Madness Kills Innovation and Cost Us Billions

The answers are Amazon.com (AMZN) and Apple (AAPL), respectively. But if you're like most people, you're probably less surprised by the patent-holders than by the fact that such simple ideas are eligible for patent protection in the first place.

Unfortunately, it doesn't stop there: Amazon and Apple are currently embroiled in a courtroom battle over use of the term to describe the place where one buys apps. At the center of the argument is whether Apple's use of the name "App Store" first legally prevents Amazon from calling its version the "Amazon Appstore."

Lexmark in Midst of Major Change

    LAYOFFS, ACQUISITIONS INDICATE SHIFTING FOCUS
Lexmark International’s decision earlier this year to shutter its inkjet printer operations and lay off 550 Lexington workers might have surprised some, but it was mounting evidence of a business in transition.

5 Reasons HP Won't Fire Ceo Meg Whitman (At Least for Now)

Ask anyone closely involved with Hewlett-Packard if Meg Whitman is doing a good job, and you'll get the same answer: Take a look at the stock.
Since the former eBay CEO took over in September, it's crashed by almost 50 percent, from $23 to $12.
Now ask those same HP observers and insiders if they think that Whitman will be fired. No one close to the company seems to think she's at risk.
    Here's why:
    1. A lot of employees like her. Some missteps aside, she's winning over HP's workforce. "She connects with employees," one HPer told us. "She's personable. She says all the right things, what they want to hear. They have confidence in her even if they don't have it in the company."...Read More

Hey Clover Please Help, Uk Reman Toner Company Deal falls Trough, Disabled Workers Loose Jobs

DISABLED employees at Bridgend’s Remploy factory face a grim Christmas knowing that all of them will now lose their jobs in the new year.
The 47-strong workforce at the doomed plant had been hopeful that some workers would be saved by a takeover bid from ink cartridge recycling firm Green Office Co-op.
Staff at the Waterton Industrial Estate factory, who estimated around 20 jobs could have been saved by the rescue deal, said they were told less than a month ago that a sale was nearing completion.
But their hopes have now been dashed as Remploy confirmed on Friday the deal had fallen through.
The Gazette understands a provisional date for the factory’s closure has now been set for January 11, when its 67-year history will come to an end....More

One Of Uk's Richest Man Creates Website to Rebut HP Allegations over Autonomy Deal

Autonomy founder Mike Lynch has stepped up his unusual public defense by launching a website designed to bolster his argument that allegations of accounting fraud are untrue.
Hewlett-Packard made that stunning accusation last week, claiming that Lynch and other Autonomy executives engaged in systematic accounting tricks that inflated the company's revenues before HP acquired it last year.
Rather than offering the standard "no comment" and ducking behind a wall of lawyers, Lynch has been all over TV and newspapers shooting down the notion that anything funny was going on at Autonomy.
The website is called "AutonomyAccounts.org" and appears to have gone live Monday...More
